Why Plan Lessons?
"Lesson planning is part of the process of making pedagogical, intellectual and ideological choices...It is where we start making choices about what is important to know, how we want to explain it, and how we can make it possible for our students to figure it out also".
from Singer, Alan J & the Hofstra New Teachers Network (2009). Social Studies for Secondary Schools: Teaching to Learn, Learning to Teach. 3rd ed. New York: Routledge, p 219
Authorized Resources
Wondering what's the 'textbook' for a particular subject and grade? Use the Authorized Resources Database.
Under Authorization Status choose "Student Basic" to find the name of textbooks. Increasingly Alberta Education gives schools a choice of textbooks, so you may find more than one title for a particular subject and grade.
This database will also inform you about other resources Alberta Education has approved for use by students and teachers (although you are not confined to using only these).
The Doucette Library purchases many, but not all, of these resources. Check the catalogue (use browse, title) to see what we have.
Curriculum Documents
The Alberta Program of Studies specifies learning outcomes and curricular topics for all grades and subjects. It's available on the Alberta Education and the LearnAlberta websites.
Print copies of the POS are available to borrow from the Doucette Library (375.0097123).
Curriculum summaries (e.g. Grade Five At-a-Glance) help you see cross-curricular connections, especially in elementary grades.
Stay current with curriculum changes through Alberta's Education twice yearly Connections Newsletter.
