Archival Images
Since many historical images are in the public domain, various digitized image archives are a great source of copyright free images. The following PowerPoint slides by Kim Clarke, Director of the Doucette Library of Teaching Resources, highlights some Canadian (and Albertan) archives and provides step-by-step instructions on how to access and use them.
Finding copyright free images
- Creative Commons Licensed MaterialAn explanation of Creative Commons licenses, which enable sharing and use through free easy-to-use copyright licenses.
- Creative Commons SearchUse this to search various digital media sources that have content you can share, use and remix: including Flickr, Open Clip Art, Jamendo (music) etc. Look carefully in each result to find out the use restrictions. Another very effective way to search Flickr, is to use Flickr Storm.
- Wikimedia CommonsA database of over 23 million media files to which anyone can contribute
- Google's Advanced Image SearchChange the "usage rights' box (at the bottom of the page) to what you want; e.g. "free to use and share").
- 2Learn.ca Image GalleryOver 3400 copyright free images for teachers and students
- FreeImagesAlmost 400,000 images to browse. You have to set up a free account to download. Suggested attribution is "FreeImages.com/Artist’s Member Name."
- Open Use Multimedia CollectionsLinks to a large numbers of resources freely available for educators to use with their students.
- 85 Free Stock Photo Websitesa list of 85 stock photo websites
