LAW Preparing for National Committee on Accreditation Exams
The National Committee on Accreditation evaluates the credentials of foreign lawyers or Canadians with a foreign law degree who wish to be admitted as a lawyer in Canada.
NCA Preparation Courses
Several Canadian universities have launched programs of courses designed to meet the needs of foreign-trained lawyers and law students working towards completing their NCA requirements. Some of these are online or distance learning programs.
- University of Calgary Foreign-trained Lawyers ProgramThe Foreign Trained-Lawyers Program (FTLP) is a one-year Post-bachelor’s Certificate offered by the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. The FTLP will help you complete the educational requirements you need to become an accredited lawyer in Canada. Students in the FTLP will receive a high-quality legal education in Canadian law and they will be part of a vibrant, inclusive and supportive community and upon graduation they will be part of the alumni of Canada’s most innovative law school.
- Osgoode NCA exam prep course.Osgoode Professional Development's NCA Exam Prep Course is specifically designed for foreign qualified lawyers planning to write the National Committee on Accreditation's Examinations.
- UBC Master of Laws (Common Law) - National Committee on Accreditation (NCA)The LLM CL Program has been designed in consultation with the NCA to help students demonstrate competency in those subjects where the NCA commonly requires additional training. As an LLM CL student, you may select UBC law courses to help you meet the NCA's requirements while you also complete a master's degree.
- University of Alberta Internationally Trained Lawyer Pathway – NCA AccreditationThe Internationally Trained Lawyer Pathway serves as an alternate route to the NCA accreditation process – the qualification process to practice law in Canada – and prepares internationally educated lawyers to enter the Canadian legal profession. International law graduates can obtain the necessary equivalency qualification to practice law in Canada through the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA).
- University of New Brunswick NCA Student AdmissionThe University of New Brunswick Law can annually accept only a limited number of NCA students as full-time no-degree students.
- University of Toronto NCA Review ProgramThe NCA Review Program (NCAR), offered by the Internationally Trained Lawyers Program (ITLP), is a part-time intensive program providing dedicated exam preparation support in the most required NCA subjects. Attend in-person at the U of T Faculty of Law, Toronto, or join in virtually.
Law schools accepting NCA applicants
Other law schools allow NCA applicants to apply to take specific courses required by the National Committee on Accreditation.
- Queen's UniversityAfter applying to the NCA, individuals can apply to take upper year courses at Queen’s Law.
- University of ManitobaNCA applicants can apply for admission to take courses to complete the NCA accreditation requirements.
- University of New BrunswickUNB annually accepts a limited number of NCA applicants as full-time no-degree students.
- University of VictoriaNCA applicants can apply to take courses during the summer semester.
- University of Ottawa Common Law SectionPersons who received advanced standing from the NCA can apply to do the course work required by the NCA.
