This guide contains tools and sources for geocoding addresses in Victorian Britain. It was developed for the Victorian Literary Sociability project.
Geocoders
- GeoNamesA geographical database of place names with latitude/longitude coordinate information.
- Gazetteer of British Place NamesProvides latitude/longitude and National Grid Reference Number for over 50,000 locations in Great Britain.
- Google MapsGoogle Maps is a good tool for exploratory searching. It can be used for finding the latitude/longitude coordinates for places and addresses. It can also function as a reverse geocoder.
- NominatumNominatum is the search engine for OpenStreetMap. It can be used for searching for buildings, addresses and places. It provides detailed locational information including the latitude/longitude coordinates. It can also function as a reverse geocoder.
- Geohack Reverse GeocoderSee the corresponding location on a map for a specific latitude/longitude. A good way to verify the coordinates.
- LocationIQSimple single address look up for free
- Open PlaquesSite providing locational information for historic plaques which detail the links between people and places. This web version will give the street address.
NOTE: There is an Open Plaques Excel data file containing the records with their corresponding latitude/longitude coordinates.
