- Limitations of GenAI Tools
Students are responsible for the work they submit for assessment.
- Ensure you are compliant with the course requirements
- Some instructors are open to AI use for assignments whereas others are not
- Clarify if and how Gen AI can be used for assignments
- Read your course syllabus carefully and ask for clarification
- Be transparent and honest in how you used GenAI for academic work
- eg if you used Copilot to brainstorm keywords for a literature search on a topic, indicate this in your paper.
What might GenAI tools do for you?
- Help you brainstorm ideas
- Create outlines for essays
- Assist with explaining concepts
- Create search strategies
- Develop and refine research questions
- Identify research gaps
- Synthesize findings
- Explore similar articles
What should GenAI tools NOT do for you?
- Complete your assignments
- Provide evidence without fact-checking the LLM’s source data
- Understand and interpret human emotions
- Make ethical or moral judgments

The Library has created a comprehensive resource guide about AI. It is continually updated.
- Tools like ChatGPT consume huge amounts of water and energy
- These tools may use artistic works without their creators’ consent
- Authors have signed an open letter demanding that AI tools seek permission and provide compensation
- Visual artists are suing over the use of their work by image generators
- These tools are “trained” by low-paid gig workers, often in developing countries.
- Some tech leaders are calling for a pause on AI research to address ethical issues, prevent negative consequences

Limited Understanding of Context
- Training data cut-offs may vary
- Free versions of tools may have limited access
Risk of incorrect, inconsistent, or biased content
- Some GenAI tools generate fake citations (hallucinations)
- May rely too heavily on metadata (e.g. abstracts)
- Always read the full text of the article to confirm findings and statements
Lack of creativity and analysis is writing

Networks and Discovery Resources

Some GenAI tools discover the literature and synthesize the findings.
REMEMBER! You still need to ensure that the information is correct, and you need to interpret/synthesize the findings.
- Scite.ai
- Elicit
- Scopus.ai
Many resources, including Scite.ai and Scopus,ai require a subscription to use all of the power of the tool. The Library is currently investigating these resources.
