Indigenous Data Sovereignty
Indigenous data sovereignty is at the centre of research data management planning for projects undertaken with Indigenous communities. The resources below will assist researchers and Indigenous research partners to develop data management practices that support Indigenous data sovereignty.
- The First Nations Principles of OCAP®The OCAP® (ownership, control, access, and possession) principles assert that First Nations have control over data collection processes, and that they own and control how this information is used. Learn about OCAP® and register for training here.
- First Nations Information Governance CentreFNIGC's web site hosts the First Nations Data Centre, the OCAP® Principles, and the First Nations Data Governance Strategy.
- CARE Principles for Indigenous Data GovernanceDeveloped by the Global Indigenous Data Alliance, which includes representatives from Canada, the CARE principles were developed to complement the FAIR principles and centre Indigenous values and collective interests. Care stands for Collective benefit, Authority of Control, Responsibility, and Ethics.
- Local Contexts Labels and LicensesBased on the Creative Commons licenses, Local Contexts allows Indigenous communities to create Traditional Knowledge or Biocultural labels to assert community control over data management. Traditional Knowledge labels set out community-specific rules nad responsibilities regarding access and use of traditional knowledge. Biocultural labels define community expectations about appropriate use of biocultural collections and data. Local contexts is also working to develop licenses that can be used by Indigenous communities to protect their intellectual property.
