This focus on learning in, from and for the workplace also brings with it questions about the nature of interventions that might assist the learning process and of the roles of those responsible directly or indirectly for such interventions. Since workplace learning cannot be considered without reference to its context, another aim of the journal is to explore the organisational, policy, political, resource issues and other factors which influence how, when and why that learning takes place.
- The Learning Organization The Learning Organization aims to bring new ideas, debate issues, introduce innovative methods and offer practical case studies to practitioners, consultants, researchers and students worldwide. This approach underplays the impact of wider socio-cultural contexts and intra-organizational politics and overplays the universal applicability of this western concept. In contrast, The Learning Organization, as an international journal of critical studies in organizational learning, seeks accounts of good theoretically informed, critical thinking and practice from around the globe. It aims to put issues around organizational learning in the participatory age of social media firmly on the agenda and promotes critical analysis such as of culture, organizational power, politics, managerial ideologies, and deficit notion of employees. Teaching Entrepreneurship to Undergraduates by Colin Jones An experienced entrepreneur and educator, Colin Jones has written this book to help entrepreneurship educators pause and reflect upon their students' learning, and therefore their own responsibilities as educators. He advocates a student-centric way to teach entrepreneurship and to building the curriculum. He shakes up the reader's thinking and invites discussion on an experiential learning approach, to engage students in learning about entrepreneurship. This book is deliberatively provocative, and awakens another level of thinking on how to teach entrepreneurship. It will be required reading for entrepreneurship educators and those building a university entrepreneurship programme for years to come.

Shulman (Foreword by) Business is the largest undergraduate major in the United States and still growing. This reality, along with the immense power of the business sector and its significance for national and global well-being, makes quality education critical not only for the students themselves but also for the public good. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's national study of undergraduate business education found that most undergraduate programs are too narrow, failing to challenge students to question assumptions, think creatively, or understand the place of business in larger institutional contexts. Rethinking Undergraduate Business Education examines these limitations and describes the efforts of a diverse set of institutions to address them by integrating the best elements of liberal arts learning with business curriculum to help students develop wise, ethically grounded professional judgment.

Call Number: HF1141 -- .L43 2003ebISBN: 9780203416648Publication Date: 2003-05-01Teaching Business Ethics for Effective Learning by Ronald R. Sims The key to teaching business ethics successfully, says Sims, is to start with clear goals and a sensible expectation of outcomes, and with a true knowledge and appreciation of how people actually learn. Seems obvious enough, he says, but the surprise is that so few understand this. Thus, the teaching of business ethics is often an unproductive, frustrating exercise in futility. Sims hopes to change that. Proceeding with the conviction that open communications between teacher and student before, during, and after the teaching experience is vital, Sims identifies key teaching processes, gives practical advice on designing and planning the curriculum, and offers guidance on how to develop a climate conducive to effective learning. He highlights the importance of creating a classroom climate that encourages open dialogue, good moral conversation, and conversational learning. And throughout he emphasizes that learning styles and experiential learning theory are cornerstones of teaching business ethics, thus taking an approach unlike any in the literature. An important guide for those who are new to teaching this essential subject, Sims' book will also be helpful for more experienced teachers who are wondering why their own methods do not always work, or do not work as well as they believe they should. Sims identifies important processes that must be managed if business ethics is to be taught and learned successfully--processes such as creating stakeholder commitment to the goals, purposes, and outcomes of the teaching effort, and curriculum design and planning that are attuned to individual differences in learning styles, motivation, and values. Also included in Sims' processes are the development of individual school outcomes, and expectations, and the assessment procedures that can measure them. He discusses the importance of incorporating debriefing into an experiential learning exercise or discussion, and goes on to give an in-depth discussion of the pedagogical approaches that allow teachers to teach the practical and theoretical components of the subject simultaneously. Well illustrated with examples, such as an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and a way to institutionalize outcomes assessment by means of total quality management, Sims' book returns constantly to his major theme: that to teach business ethics effectively the teacher must first create a climate of trust and sharing within and between students, and between students and teacher, and that the teacher must have a concrete way to measure the impact of the teaching effort's results.
Call Number: HF5387 -- .S572 2002ebISBN: 9781567204827Publication Date: 2002-05-30Experiences in Teaching Business Ethics by Ronald R. Sims; William I. Sauser A volume in Contemporary Human Resource Management: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities Series Editor Ronald R. Sims, College of William and Mary The primary purpose of this book is to stimulate dialogue and discussion about the most effective ways of teaching ethics. Contributors to the book focus on approaches and methodologies and lessons learned that are having an impact in leading students to confront with accountability and understanding the bases of their ethical thinking, the responsibilities they have to an enlarged base of stakeholders (whose needs and interests often are conflicting), and their stewardship to use their talents responsibility not only in fulfilling an enterprise's economic goals but also to recognize the impact of their actions on both individuals and larger society. The primary audiences for the book are those individuals responsible for teaching management, especially those with responsibilities for teaching business ethics. But the book is also designed for practicing managers, for these managers have among their most important responsibilities the development of people in their organizations who have the integrity, values, and competences to be effective managers of economic resources while at the same time to recognize the roles of their enterprise in shaping society

Crittenden (Editor); Kathryn Esper (Editor); Nathaniel Karst (Editor); Rosa Slegers (Editor) The ability to enrich student learning is fundamental to the educational process and requires a broad range of talents. A truly great educator will inspire students through a well-grounded approach to stimulating intellectual curiosity and growth, while maintaining high standards of performance. This had led to a growing requirement for staff to adopt a scholarly approach to learning and teaching practice, and to undertake scholarship of learning and teaching as part of ongoing professional development. This text explores broad best practice approaches to undertaking enquiry into learning and teaching in higher education. It provides an introduction for staff who have been educated within a range of academic disciplines, often with high-level but very focused knowledge about, and understandings of, research processes to the potentially new world of educational enquiry. This is complemented by chapters exploring what educational enquiry means in the context of different academic disciplines, including physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, the life sciences, the arts, the humanities, the health professions, and law. It also includes: An overview of research methodology including data collection, literature reviews, good ethical practice, and research dissemination Case studies of actual research projects to support understanding of how to carry out educational enquiry in practice. - Association for Education Finance and Policy As a dynamic organization, AEFP needs to tackle the important education finance issues of the day. They are not solely about funding mechanisms and alternative approaches to taxation. Teachers' decisions about where to teach and how to teach strongly affect the cost of education. Moreover, both federal and state policies now link governance and instructional practices directly to finance. Key education finance policymakers also are key policymakers for personnel policies, governance policies, and curricular and instructional policies. Our journal has reflected this link between finance and policy since its inception. At the June, 2010 AEFA Board of Directors meeting, the Board voted to change the name of our organization to the Association for Education Finance and Policy (AEFP). We believe that the new name reflects both where our organization currently is and where we hope it will continue to thrive. The name not only recognizes the broader policy goals of the organization, but also acknowledges the global nature of the questions that we address and the constituencies we hope to speak to.
