Finding Theses
This guide will help you locate theses and dissertations, in both print and electronic format, from the University of Calgary and elsewhere.
Library Simple and Advanced Search
Library Simple Search
If you know the specific thesis or dissertation you are searching for, you can start using library simple search.
- Go to the library homepage library.ucalgary.ca.
- Type in the title or author (if known), and click search.
- Relevant items based on the search terms will be displayed on the search results page.
- Use the Filter my Results feature to limit your results to theses & dissertations. Under Item Type, select Dissertations, and then select Apply Filters. Please note when you are working on smaller screens, the function appears as a filter icon with no label.

Theses and dissertations might be available in both digital and physical format. Select the item to get the full item information to see if any physical copy or online access is available.
Library Advanced Search
If you want to find sources related to a specific topic, you will most likely use library advanced search. Library advanced search allows you to combine keywords to describe the resources you would like find.
- Go to the library homepage library.ucalgary.ca.
- You can access the Advanced search using the left button below the library search box.
- Under the Search Filters section of the box you can add the title, author, or keyword(s) of the theses you want to find.
- Use the filter condition on the right side of the box to filter your results before you search.
- Use the Item Type drop down menu and select Dissertations to limit your results to theses and dissertations.
- Theses and dissertations might be available in both digital and physical format. Select the item to get the full item information to see if any physical copy or online access is available.
