Generative AI Tools for Students

Generative AI is transforming how research is conducted, from literature reviews to data analysis and writing. While it offers powerful tools for productivity and creativity, it also raises important questions about authorship, integrity, and transparency

Microsoft Copilot Vs. 365 Copilot | What's the Difference?

Microsoft Copilot (UCalgary Secure Chat)

UCalgary offers a secure version of Microsoft Copilot Chat for users with UCalgary IT accounts. A green shield icon clearly indicates this version and provides enhanced privacy and protection, allowing you to safely input information classified as level 1, 2, or 3. The public version, by contrast, should only be used for level 1 (public) information, as it doesn’t guarantee similar safeguards and may pose risks related to data storage, bias, or transparency.

You can access Copilot Chat:

  • Directly in the Microsoft Edge browser (through its built‑in interface),

  • By visiting the Copilot Chat website in any browser, or

  • Via the desktop icon on managed UCalgary devices, all provided you see the green shield indicating the secure version.

Note: While UCalgary supports and encourages using the secure Copilot Chat, students should check with instructors before using it for coursework, as misuse could raise concerns around academic integrity.

Copilot Pro (Personal Subscription)

For users interested in accessing more advanced AI features ranging beyond what’s available through institutional access, Microsoft offers Copilot Pro, a personal-level subscription. Copilot Pro provides:

  • Preferred access to the most advanced AI models, especially helpful during peak usage times,

  • Higher usage limits than the free tier offers,

  • Early access to experimental AI features via Copilot Labs,

  • Integration into Office apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
