Formatting Tips for ChatGPT

  • In-text Citations: Include the prompt or a brief description of the interaction in your text. Treat it like a personal communication (APA) or add it in prose (MLA) since it's not retrievable by others [1].
  • Works Cited/Reference List: Create an entry for any responses you quote or paraphrase from ChatGPT, specifying the prompt used [2].

Example of In-text Citation (APA):

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notion that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023) [1].

These guidelines ensure transparency and proper attribution when using AI tools like ChatGPT in academic or professional work.
