Industry Information
According to IBIS World: “industry research is generally a collection of information detailing economic, market and (sometimes) political factors that influence industries, which in turn affect sectors and economies.” This resource can help you understand what types of information to gather in order to understand the area you’ll be operating in: https://www.ibisworld.com/blog/the-complete-guide-to-industry-research/99/1127/
Industry research is used for the purposes of:
- Creating sales, business, market, or strategic plans
- Assessing risks, growth prospects, or competitive landscapes
- Making business decisions based on operating environments
Tips when doing industry research
- Start broad - your new innovations will likely not have an industry associated with them (e.g. Continuous glucose monitor manufacturing will not be an industry - you’d have to look for medical device manufacturing)
- Industries are not solitary - your supply and demand industry will impact your industry. (e.g. medical device manufacturing may be impacted by software or computer chip manufacturing)
