Zotero Citation Manager

Zotero is a citation management tool that will help you collect, save, organize, share, and cite your sources when researching.

Register a Zotero Account

To create an account for Zotero, visit their Registration page. 

Download Zotero

To download Zotero: 

  1. Go to the Zotero Download page
    • The site will detect your operating system and browser.
    • Zotero can't be installed on Chromebooks running ChromeOS. 
  2. Download Zotero and browser connectors for the browsers you use most often.

While you can use Zotero through the web interface, it’s most functional when you use the Desktop version. Make sure to use the sync button in the top right (the green curved arrow) to synchronize with your Zotero.org account.

 

Microsoft Word & Google Docs Instructions

Installation of Zotero

  1. Close all Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Word/Outlook/Teams)
  2. Open the downloaded Zotero file (.exe or .dmg). Check your downloads folder if you cannot find it. 
  3. Follow the installation directions
    • Zotero and an automatic MS Word add-in will be installed
  4. Open the Zotero program
  5. Open MS Word
    •   Notice the word Zotero on your toolbar.

Installation of Browser Connector (Add-on/extension)

  1. Install the Zotero Connector for your browser 
    • Browser may restart after installation
    • You'll notice a Zotero icon (a "Z" or a small rectangle) on the right side of your browser toolbar.

Zotero and UofC fulltext

To automatically detect UofC Library's proxy server to give you better access to our full-text subscriptions, and allow you to download PDFs to your Zotero library, go to Edit/Preferences. In the Resolver box, paste in this link: https://ucalgary.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/openurl/01UCALG_INST/01UCALG_INST:UCALGARY

You will then notice notifications like the one below.

You can tell Zotero not to proxy a particular site, but this may affect Zotero's ability to download the full text. For more information on customizing Zotero's proxy settings, consult the documentation on Zotero Connector preferences, and scroll down to "Proxies."
