MDCH630 - Designing Medical Education Research
This guide is designed to assist you with literature reviews of all types related to medical education research. Approaches, both quantitative and qualitative, are discussed, with links to relevant resources and tools.
Assessment of Quality
How you assess the quality of studies depends to a large degree on both the method of the review and the recognized methods for appraising the underlying studies that you are including in your analysis. Below are a few common resources, but you should also consult existing reviews that are similar to your own, and search for literature on the appraisal of particular study designs.
-
Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) ChecklistsAppraisal checklists for a variety of study types, including RCTs, systematic reviews and qualitative research.
-
Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool - MMATThe MMAT is intended to be used as a checklist for concomitantly appraising and/or describing studies included in systematic mixed studies reviews (reviews including original qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies).
