Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Guide

This guide provides tips for participants in Wikipedia Edit-a-thons

How to start contributing to Wikipedia

Register for an account with Wikipedia. Wikipedia has an entry on policies and best practices for choosing a user name that is a useful read. Most accounts do not use real names and we recommend that you choose a non-identifying user name

It is important to register for an account in advance of an Edit-a-thon, and to create your user page (so that it is a blue link). We also recommend you play in your sandbox to get familiar with how Wikipedia works.

You must have had an account for about 4 days and have made at least 10 edits before starting new articles or performing other more complex tasks in Wikipedia, so leaving this step to the last minute is not advised.

This Art+Feminism video walks you through the first steps you should take after creating your username: creating your user page and trying out your sandbox.
