Transkribus

Who do I contact if I have questions?

Contact digitize@ucalgary.ca if you have any questions or need clarification on topics not addressed here related to our transcription projects. You can also check out Transkribus' website for instructions and FAQs.

Should we transcribe accents or other diacritics?

Yes. In the Transkribus web version, you can use alt code (for example, è is alt0232). There are many alt code guides that come up when you Google them.

Do I need to add annotations?

Use the unclear annotation for illegible words. If you would like to add a note on something, you can add the comment annotation. Don't worry about labelling other things with annotations like person or place.

What do the different page statuses mean?

  • New: the page has not been started yet.
  • In progress: the page is ready to be transcribed.*
  • Ready for review: the page has been transcribed and needs to be checked.*
  • Completed: the page has been transcribed and reviewed.

*You only need to change in progress pages to ready for review once done.

Is Transkribus free?

Transkribus recently came out with a pricing model, which includes both a free and an on-demand or subscription model. You can sign up for a free account where you still have access to layout analysis and can manually transcribe. More information on their pricing models can be found on their website https://readcoop.eu/transkribus/.
