Non-Traditional Theses

Choose platforms and formats to share your work – such as exhibitions, repositories or other media. Consider how to frame your project for different audiences, and how to track engagement and impact.

Key Considerations

1. Find Platforms, Spaces, and Impact Strategies

  • Explore on-campus venues such as galleries, digital displays, and online repositories that can host or feature non-traditional work.
  • Identify digital platforms that support creative, interdisciplinary, or community-based research beyond the university.
  • Use the Research Impact Guide to explore alternative ways of tracking engagement and measuring the impact of exhibitions, performances, participatory work, or creative outputs.

2. Frame and Tailor Communication for Different Audiences

  • Plan how you will present your project for academic, community, professional, and public audiences.
  • Use Knowledge Mobilization Resources to support accessible communication and translating research into action through events, partnerships, and public engagement.

3. Disseminate Ethically and Contextually

  • Ensure your sharing practices respect cultural protocols, confidentiality agreements, and community ownership principles.
  • Consult the Indigenous Research Support Team (IRST) for guidance on appropriate dissemination practices when working with Indigenous knowledge, communities, or ceremonial research.
  • Avoid extractive or decontextualized sharing by highlighting the relationships and contexts that shaped your work.
  • Advocate for diverse dissemination models using the DORA Principles.
  • Refer to Knowledge to Impact to learn how UCalgary supports responsible, impactful research dissemination.
