Brother JX 1714

The Brother JX1714 is a compact and user-friendly sewing machine designed for beginners and hobbyists. It has 17 built-in stitch patterns, including straight, zigzag, and decorative stitches.  This lightweight machine has a dial for stitch selection, a free arm for sewing cuffs and sleeves, a built-in LED light for better visibility, and includes an auto-size buttonhole feature.

How to Use the Brother JX1714 Sewing Machine

This machine has several steps to start sewing:

  1. Bobbin Set up and Lower Threading.
  2. Upper Threading
  3. Thread Tension Check

Troubleshooting

  • If the sewing machine doesn't work please check:
    • if it's off, turn it on.
    • if the bobbin winder shaft is to the right, push it to the left.
    • if the foot controller is plugged in.
  • If the needle breaks, call staff using the iPad by the Reception Desk.
  • If the upper thread breaks please check:
    • If the upper threading was done propperly (thread outside of the guide), if so, correct it.
    • If there are knots or tangles in the thread, if so, remove them.
    • If the tension is setup too tight, loosen it using the thread tension dial.
    • If the needle is bent or blunt, call a Staff member using the iPad by the Reception desk.
    • If the area around the hole in the needle plate or presser foot is scratched, call a Staff member using the iPad by the Reception desk.
    • If the bobbin case is scratched or has a burr, replace the bobbin or call a Staff member.\
  • If the lower thread is tangled or breaks check:
    • If the bobbin was wound correctly, if not rewind it.
    • If the bobbin is scratched or doesn't turn smoothly, call a Staff member to replace the bobbin.
    • If the thread is tangled, then remove the tangled thread and clean the race.
    • If the bobbin is set incorrectly, if so, reset the bobbin thread correctly.
  • If the thread tension is incorrect then check:
    • if the upper thread is correct.
    • If the bobbin is wound correctly.
    • If the presser foot is properly attached, if not, please call a Staff member using the iPad by the Reception desk.
    • Adjust the tension of the upper thread using the dial.
    • If the bobbin is set incorrectly,  if so, reset the bobbin thread correctly.
  • If the fabric is wrinkled please check:
    • If the upper thread or the bobbin are fitted properly, if so, please correct.
    • If the needle is bent or blunt, call a Staff member in order to change the needle.
    • If the fabric is thin, the fabric is not being fed correctly, then sew with a stabilizer material under.
    • If the thread tension is incorrect, adjust the tension of the upper thread using the dial.
  • If some stitches are skipped, check:
    • If the upper threading is ok, if so, correct the threading.
    • This can happen for some combinations of thread, fabric and needle.
    • If the needle is bent or blunt, call a Staff member in order to change the needle.
